McCash’s Country Store is one of the Perth businesses in the running to be crowned as the best in the UK – any local business can be put forward, with a prize of a £500 Perth Gift Card on offer

Perthshire’s oldest supplier of animal foods and outdoor clothing has been nominated in a search to find the UK’s favourite local business. McCash’s Country Store opened in Perth in 1998 with roots back to 1746.

Manager of McCash’s Country Store Alastair Muirhead said:

“I think with animals in general, people like being able to pop in and have a chat, getting advice on their animals’ health and nutritional requirements. Then, with items like footwear and quality country clothing, people like to be able to try them on in person rather than buying online and having to make numerous trips to the post office when they don’t fit.

“Pet ownership has gone up since the pandemic, so it has been a busy time at McCash’s. At the moment, the cost of living crisis is hitting households hard, to the extent that some people are giving up their animals and dogs’ homes across Perthshire are filling up. We’re working with the Perthshire Abandoned Dogs Society (PADS) and the Dogs Trust to raise funds, and have a food bank in store where people can donate animal food.

“Another way we’re helping is with our Dog Rescue Discount Card. Anyone that adopts a dog from PADS will receive a card from McCash’s that entitles them to a discount off their pet’s food for the rest of the animal’s life.

“We’ll also show customers where to get the best value for their money. We’re not tied to certain suppliers, so we’re not trying to get customers onto a certain brand for their animals. And if there’s a specific product customers want, we can get it for them quickly. Customer service is always at the forefront, and this helps to build trust.

“We’re proud to have been nominated in the search to find the UK’s favourite local business, it really means a lot. Everyone at McCash’s keeps animals themselves, so we have not only the knowledge but the empathy and understanding too. I think the nomination is down to the team, and the relationships we’ve built with customers over time.”

McCash’s is also one of the places where you can spend a Perth Gift Card. The Perth Gift Card was launched by Miconex in Perth in 2015, to encourage people to shop locally. Miconex is sponsoring the Help Us Find The UK’s Favourite Local Business competition.

Alastair adds: “We’ve been a part of the Perth Gift Card for a number of years, and customers are always pleased to be able to use their gift card with us. People are often given the cards from work or as a gift, and there’s a satisfaction in being able to treat their animals. It keeps money locked into Perth, which is essential. In our eyes, local shopping beats online shopping every day of the week and we need initiatives like the Perth Gift Card to encourage people to love where they live.”

Any local business can be nominated, with the business receiving the most votes being crowned as the UK’s favourite. The UK’s favourite business, and one person who nominated them, will receive £500 of gift cards.

Other Perth businesses nominated in the competition so far include The Bean Shop, Number Five and Casella & Polegato.

Colin Munro, managing director of Miconex said: “It’s fantastic to see nominations for some iconic Perth local businesses. Perth is consistently voted as one of the best places to live in Scotland, and that is largely down to our array of independent shops, restaurants, cafés, venues and more. They make Perth what it is. The winning business will be announced on the 21st December, and I hope to see many more nominations for Perth businesses.”

Vote for McCash’s Country Store or any other Perth business for free at www.lovelocalwin.co.uk. Voting closes on the 21st December 2022.
